Sorroundings
The land of the Salento: where the beauty of its landscape
accompanies its cultural heritage; the welcoming land of people
extending yet another smile.
A land rich of ancient traditions: handicrafts, authentic
cooking, music and dances. A land between two seas: the Adriatic
offers the brightness of the morning sunrise and the high
cliffs; the Ionio shares its thousands of shades of sunset
and the wild expanses of fine sandy beaches.
Its nature is represented by the land which still conserves
grand natural treasures: the marshes (Torre Guaceto
and Cesine, area managed by the WWF); the coastlines,
which vary from the Adriatic to Ionio, include
breathtaking sites; the landscapes of the Serre; the carsic
phenomena; and moreover, one of the most important flora of
Italy.
Its art and history are represented by: the many remains
and signs of the long and tough history of the Salento region;
the castles (Corigliano, Copertino, Lecce); the rupestrian
churches; the early Christian crypts; the Baroque churches
(Lecce, Galatina, Gallipoli); the rural architecture;
the dolmen and menhir; the numerous archeological areas
(Ugento, Patu', Roca Vecchia, Porto Badisco, Muro Leccese);
and the museums (Ugento, Lecce and Maglie).
Handicrafts: basket-making (Acquarica del Capo), embroidery
(Maglie), ceramics (Lucugnano, Ruffano, Cutrofiano), papier-mache'
(Lecce).
